Bailey, Charlotte Marie

SHERMAN - Charlotte Marie Bailey, 56, of Sherman passed away Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008 at her home. She leaves behind two sons, Joseph Bailey of Corpus Christi, Michael Bailey of Lewisville; a daughter and son-in-law, Martina and Andy Houser of Sherman. She also leaves one granddaughter, Hanna Houser. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ann Cato and her only sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Roy Smith. Mother was always a good cook and took pride in her work in deli employment. She instilled strong work ethics in all three of her children and taught us to work hard and do the job right. She had a smile that could charm the coldest heart, and a sense of humor that always kept laughter surrounding her. Her ability to find humor in everything was inspiration for her children to do the same. Unfortunately, mother is only one of the growing numbers of Americans who are uninsured or underinsured. She was caught in the required two year wait after being disabled before becoming eligible for Medicare. Although preventative medical care such as colonoscopy, endoscopies, CT scan, etc. probably would not have prevented my mother's cancer, perhaps it could have been diagnosed earlier and treated before it riddled her body and she would be here with us today celebrating Christmas, a holiday she so loved. Her Medicare became effective Sept. 1, 2008, she was diagnosed Sept. 3, 2008 and died Dec. 14, 2008. I know her story is not uncommon and it is not one person's fault, but a testament to our failing health system. There have been positive effects through this path. We have met organizations who do want to help the uninsured, the needy. If it was not for the Greater Texoma Health Clinic in Denison, we probably would not have been blessed with the past two years. They helped her with the multiple medications she was required to take to keep alive. They kept her bronchitis and other ailments controlled. But, they are limited on what they can do because they are a small clinic trying to help those in need without a large budget. We thank them and are very grateful for every thing they did for my mother. Another organization that helps those in need regardless of the ability to pay is Home Hospice of Grayson County. They were able to keep my mother as comfortable and die with dignity to the best of their ability. Our mother did not want a funeral, memorial or family night. She simply wanted to be cremated and have her ashes spread over the ocean. So I ask anyone, please, instead of any flowers or memorials you may wish to send, donate to one of the above organizations. They need your help to survive. In these unsure times, you and your loved one may need them. If you can't donate, then volunteer your precious time. They both would be very thankful with any time you can lend. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Waldo Funeral Home. The online guest register can be signed at www.waldofuneralhome.com.

He was the fourth of seven children that included his brothers, Bill and Hubert, and his sisters, Margie, Mable, Clara and Sylvia. She passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, the 13th of December 2008. Shirley graduated from Pasadena High School, and after attending Sam Houston State and the University of Houston, she completed training at the University of Texas Medical Branch with a degree in Medical Technology. Shirley worked at the VA Hospital until she received a letter of proposal from Captain Thomas Corpening, M.D. She took a boat to Japan where they were married on the 29th of April 1953. While there, she learned the art of Japanese flower arranging, from the master who taught the Japanese Emperor, and earned two degrees. Shirley is survived by her husband, Tom, an M.D.; Lloyd, an attorney, Carolyn, a CPA; Owen, an engineer; her grandchildren, Robert, Kirby and Deborah; and her siblings, Lloyd McDonald Jr., Virginia Lea and Elizabeth Rodgers. Shirley took great joy in caring for her children and grandchildren, sewing, making beautiful quilts, and her specialty, bargain hunting. She was a member of the Tanglewood Garden Club. She was proud of her Scottish ancestry. Shirley was a great cook, but it could strike fear into our hearts to ask "What's for dinner" and be told, "It's a surprise". She enjoyed fishing and thought "catch and release" missed the point entirely. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my own familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed, at the little jokes we always enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me ... Let my name be ever the house- hold word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effort, without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means ALL that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was, there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind, because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you. For an eternal "somewhere" very near just 'round the corner. All is well. - Canon Henry Scott Holland

Marks, Roger Edward

Roger Edward Marks, 87, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed into the arms of God on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, in Glen Rose. Funeral: 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at First United Methodist Church in Glen Rose. Interment: Squaw Creek Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wylie Funeral Home in Glen Rose. Memorials: Memorials in honor of Roger Marks may be made to the Dr. Roger E. Marks Health Care Foundation, in care of Jesse Pruitt,1021 Holden St., Box 2099, Glen Rose, Texas 76043. Roger was born in Hornell, N.Y., on April 10, 1921. By the time he was 13, he had lost both his mother and father and spent his high school years living with his grandparents in Hornell. He graduated from Hornell High School as valedictorian of his class and enrolled at Alfred University in Alfred, N.Y., where he lettered in cross-country and tennis. On his own and in financial need, he found his first job on the Alfred campus tutoring a deaf student. Although Roger did not know sign language, he quickly learned. During his stay at Alfred, he attended all of this student's classes as well as his own. He often said that he received two educations at Alfred, his own and the student that he tutored. After three years at Alfred, he applied to Albany Medical School and was accepted. Upon graduation from medical school, he made the decision to do his internship in San Francisco, Calif., where he met his future wife, Edwyna Davis. They were married in San Francisco on March 14, 1947, and moved shortly afterwards to the East Coast, where he eventually completed his service with the Army Medical Corps in Bound Brook, N.J. After answering an advertisement in a medical journal, he and his family moved to Glen Rose in December 1949. Roger joined the practice of Dr. John James Hanna, treating inpatients at the Ole Barnard's Mill physicians' offices, making house calls throughout Somervell County, often to be paid with a sack of corn or a side of beef. In 1955, Roger joined with Dr. Robert English and purchased the hospital from Dr. Hanna, forming Marks-English Hospital, where Dr. Marks and Dr. English delivered babies, performed emergency surgery, provided cardiac care and inpatient as well as outpatient services. In 1971, he constructed and opened Marks-English Hospital and Glen Rose Nursing Home on the current site of Glen Rose Medical Center. This was accomplished by community support from the Glen Rose Industrial Foundation and the Small Business Administration. With amazing foresight, Dr. Roger Marks envisioned a single campus, a rural continuum of health care with a sweeping grasp of a family's needs from birth to the end of life -â€" a hospital engaged with primary physicians' offices and connected to a nursing home. Roger retired in 1986 to Pecan Plantation where he volunteered as the medical director of Pecan Plantation EMS and instituted the use of a field defibrillator, which was used to save a life within the first six months of implementation. In the 35 years that he practiced medicine in Glen Rose, he had a major impact on Somervell County both as a physician and as a compassionate leader. He was mayor of Glen Rose from 1955 to 1959, established the first community library, served on the school board and as the Glen Rose Tigers' team physician where he attended football and basketball games for 40 years. He was the founding president of the Optimist Club and established the annual all-sports banquet in honor of the young athletes of Glen Rose High School. He also was on the board of First United Methodist Church of Glen Rose where he taught high school Sunday school and sponsored many youth activities. During his years of practice, Roger was often noted by his peers as an excellent diagnostician, and for his knowledge of cardiac care and treatment during a time when transportation of critically ill and seriously injured people was next to impossible without risk of life or limb. Lives were saved, babies were born and families had a doctor they knew they could count on in time of need, day or night, five miles or 25 miles away. Dr Roger E. Marks was there because he cared and he loved his community, the practice of medicine, the hospital, his church, the youth, his friends, his family and the love of his life, Edwyna. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles Edward Marks and Francis Ella Wilcox Marks; his wife, Edwyna Marks; his sister, Marion Spencer; and a granddaughter, Rachel Allen, daughter of Judy. The family would also like to express a very special thanks to Dr. Bruce Carpenter, the nurses and aides of the Glen Rose Nursing home and to The Universal Hospice of Glen Rose. Survivors: Sons, Warren and wife, Dixie, of Keller and Gary and wife, Vickie, of Glen Rose; daughters, Judy Hagen and husband, Bob, of Plano and Candy Schuelke and husband, Mike, of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Jennifer Jones and husband, Sam, Stephanie Holland and husband, Ryan, Brian Marks and wife, Jennifer, Sam Schuelke and wife, Mehgan, Heather Weaver and husband, Jason, Shanna Schuelke, Brent Marks and wife, Candice, Steven Allen, Dixie Sikes and husband, Eddie, Lucie Warfield and husband, Ben, Chris Hagen and Bradley Hagen; great-grandchildren, Gus, Jack and Oliver Jones, Cale Calahan, Madeline and Ashley Weaver, Zachary Holland, Porter and Lanie Sikes and Aubrey Schuelke; and a host of dear friends from the community of Glen Rose and surrounding areas.

Mattox, Mr. Jim (Featured Guest Book)

Former Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox, a powerhouse in Democratic politics through the 1980s, has died, state Democratic Party officials said Thursday. No other details were released, but a party spokeswoman said a statement will be issued later this afternoon.Mattox, a longtime Democrat, worked his way up the party ladder. He got involved in hometown Dallas precinct politics, won a seat in the Texas House and then served three terms in the U.S. House.A former Dallas County prosecutor, Mattox served as attorney general from 1983 to 1990 and developed a reputation as a feisty partisan in his many conflicts with then-Gov. Bill Clements, a Republican. However, Mattox's harsh treatment of Ann Richards in their 1990 primary campaign for governor damaged his reputation among some Democrats. That acrimony later cost Mattox the support of many Democratic regulars as he considered making a run for his old seat.In 1993, when Sen. Lloyd Bentsen resigned with two years remaining in his term, Richards appointed Bob Krueger until a special election could be held, a move viewed as a snub of Mattox. Mattox chose not to challenge Krueger or Kay Bailey Hutchison in the special election, which Hutchison won in a landslide.Instead, Mattox waited until the 1994 race to fill a full six-year term. He lost to Dallas investor Richard Fisher in the primary and had remained in private practice since.
