One of God's faithful followers, Dorotha L. Harper, was peacefully called home on Dec. 12, 2008. A service of celebration of Dorotha's life will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the downtown sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Tyler, with Dr. Michael Massar and Rev. Scott Wiley officiating. Private burial will be held at Cathedral in the Pines, Tyler. Dorotha was born on July 20, 1929, in Phoenix, Ariz., to the late Wilbur D. and Inez Mills McCarthy. She graduated from Comanche High School in 1945. She married the love of her life, Truman Thomas Harper, on Dec. 25, 1946, in Abilene, and they enjoyed 52 years of marriage until Truman was called home on Jan. 31, 1999. Before moving to Tyler in 1969, Truman and Dorotha resided in Dallas where she served as the pastor's secretary at Lake Highlands Baptist Church for 13 years. After moving to Tyler, she spent many years raising her children before returning to the workforce as a Kindergarten Aide for TISD. She also later worked as a secretary in the Research Department for UT Health Center at Tyler until retiring in 1993. Upon her retirement, she spent many hours pouring over books and learning new things as her thirst for knowledge was never quenched. Dorotha painted many beautiful pictures and could see beauty all around her, putting it to life on the canvas. This was also the way she looked at life, seeing the good in everything and even in tough times, she fought the good fight, never complaining through 10 years of cancer treatment and numerous surgeries. Her positive, loving and unselfish nature was contagious and radiated to all those around her. Even through her darkest days, she was the first to proclaim, "God is So Good." Upon moving to Tyler, Dorotha and Truman joined and became active members of First Baptist Church of Tyler where they taught Sunday school classes and met many lifelong friends. Dorotha's greatest joys in life came from her time spent with her precious grandchildren who affectionately named her "Gran." Whether it was time spent with her grandchildren individually or together, she delighted in being wherever they were. She went to many sporting events, concerts, school functions, etc., and enjoyed simple activities with them as well, including playing board games, watching movies, cooking and painting. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kelli Anne Harper in 1981. She is survived by two sons, Dave Harper and John M. Harper and wife, Cynthia Rossman Harper, and one daughter, Susan Harper Richardson and husband, Bobby J. Richardson, Jr., all of Tyler. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Brandon Harper, Magnolia, Thomas Harper, McKinney, LeighAnne Harper, Dallas, Ross Richardson, Austin, Randi Richardson and Reagan Richardson, Tyler. Mattox, Mr. Jim (Featured Guest Book)

Former Texas Attorney General Jim Mattox, a powerhouse in Democratic politics through the 1980s, has died, state Democratic Party officials said Thursday. No other details were released, but a party spokeswoman said a statement will be issued later this afternoon.Mattox, a longtime Democrat, worked his way up the party ladder. He got involved in hometown Dallas precinct politics, won a seat in the Texas House and then served three terms in the U.S. House.A former Dallas County prosecutor, Mattox served as attorney general from 1983 to 1990 and developed a reputation as a feisty partisan in his many conflicts with then-Gov. Bill Clements, a Republican. However, Mattox's harsh treatment of Ann Richards in their 1990 primary campaign for governor damaged his reputation among some Democrats. That acrimony later cost Mattox the support of many Democratic regulars as he considered making a run for his old seat.In 1993, when Sen. Lloyd Bentsen resigned with two years remaining in his term, Richards appointed Bob Krueger until a special election could be held, a move viewed as a snub of Mattox. Mattox chose not to challenge Krueger or Kay Bailey Hutchison in the special election, which Hutchison won in a landslide.Instead, Mattox waited until the 1994 race to fill a full six-year term. He lost to Dallas investor Richard Fisher in the primary and had remained in private practice since.

McCutchen, Merline Jackson

SHERMAN - Merline Jackson McCutchen, 85, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, after bouts of multiple physical ailments. She was born in Kenefic, Okla. on Oct. 11, 1923. She has been a resident of Sherman, and made it her home with her husband for the past 20 years. She attended University of Texas and graduated in 1945 with a business degree, but used her skills as a kindergarten teacher for almost 10 years in Shreveport, La. She was more than a kindergarten teacher, she was a teacher of life, a teacher of love, and anyone who had the privilege of knowing her, found that her kind, gentle way of loving, was who she was, and that love was given abundantly, no matter the person or circumstances. She was God's servant first, then came her family. The angels will be in awe when she enters the gates of Heaven. She leaves behind her husband, the love of her life, John W. McCutchen Jr. whom she was married to for 61 years; her son, Bill McCutchen of Houston; her daughter Sheri Abel and husband John C. Abel of Frisco; her grandchildren Sarah Zimmerman and husband Eric Zimmerman; great-granddaughter Hailyn of Prosper; her grandson Derek Abel of Frisco; and her beloved sister Jerry Kemp of Kemp, Okla. She was an artist, a teacher, a wonderful wife, a loving mother and was very active in her church, being President of her Sunday School class, a member of Rio Rojo and very involved with the Home Hospice of Grayson County Auxiliary. She gave of herself endlessly to anyone who needed it and counseled tirelessly to those who came to her with their problems or needed her special words of love and encouragement. Funeral services will be held at the Waldo Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, 2008. Family visitation hours will be held from 4 -5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008. In lieu of flowers the family has requested that contributions be made to the Home Hospice of Grayson County. The online register book can be signed at waldofuneralhome.com. Multiple angels will have to carry her crown because it will be so heavily adorned with jewels, but it will fit her perfectly and be weightless on her head. She will be deeply missed by her family and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Rhodes, Jack

The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Welch Funeral Home, 4619 Judson Road. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at First Baptist Church of Longview Sanctuary, with Dr. Tim Watson, the Rev. David English and the Rev. Dewayne Beaty officiating. Friends and family are invited to the graveside service at Rosewood Cemetery. Jack Rhodes was born in Corsicana, Texas, December 29, 1924. He would have been 84 on his next birthday. He is survived by his beautiful wife, Ruth Hightower Rhodes, with whom he spent 61 years. He is also survived by daughters, Donna Rhodes Oates and husband, Bob, of Waco and Lanna Rhodes Palmer and husband, Les, of Waco; four grandchildren, Brandon Rhodes Oates and wife, Elizabeth, of Waco, Brittany Oates Hooks and husband, Ryan, of San Antonio, Landon Palmer of New York and Logan Palmer of Waco. He also leaves a legacy of two great-grandchildren, Carter Rhodes Oates and Clarey Oates. Jack graduated from Longview High School in 1942 and was a World War II Army Air Force veteran. After his decorated service in the military, he spent much of his career in retail, first as manager of Martin's in downtown Longview, and then as owner of Tannenbaums' in Greenville and Rhodes in Gladewater. After 30 years in retail, he "retired" and moved into the real estate business. He was an active and influential deacon at First Baptist Church and a member of the Longview Rotary Club for 40 years. He and his wife also served together with Meals on Wheels. Jack was a Baylor University alumni by choice and a loyal Baylor Bears fan. His love for his alma mater and sports caused him to travel to Waco and beyond frequently to support the Bears in football, basketball and baseball. He loved to give a rowdy "Sic 'Em Bears" while cheering on his team. More than his hobbies, Papa Jack dearly loved his family and friends. He was known as the family caretaker, offering love and support to all those who came in contact with him. He leaves behind a legacy of family, service and ministry and will be dearly missed by all who were privileged enough to call him husband, daddy, pa paw and friend. Memorial donations may be made to Baylor University Student Foundation, 1 Bear Place #97026, Waco, TX 76798; or First Baptist Church, Longview World Changers, 209 E. South Street, Longview, TX 75601.
